Why not just use AI to design my brand?
You can. AI will give you a logo, a colour palette and a homepage in an afternoon, often for free. What it won't give you is taste: the judgement to pick the idea that's right for your business, and the nerve to say no to everything else. That judgement is what you're paying a designer for.
I use AI every day in my studio. This post is about where it helps, and where it stops.
I use AI too
AI helps me research a category, explore lots of ideas quickly and draft written work like brand strategy. I edit and approve everything it touches.
It never makes the final artwork. Every logo, illustration, layout and graphic a client receives is made by me. That's what I mean by human-made, taste-tested.
AI gives everyone the same answer
AI learns from what already exists, then hands you the most likely answer. Ask it for a playful logo for a coffee brand and you'll get something close to what every other coffee brand already has. It looks polished. It also looks like everyone.
For a business with real character, that's the opposite of what you need. A brand's job is to make what makes you different impossible to miss.
Options are cheap now. Choosing is the hard part.
AI can hand me dozens of logo directions before lunch. Picking the right one, and knowing why, takes years of seeing what works.
My taste comes from making things, not prompting them. Seven-plus years as a senior designer, agency work for brands like Nestlé and MYOB, selling my own work at art markets, plus animation and illustration. Taste also means saying no to the obvious idea and to this year's trend. And it means choosing what fits your business, not what I'd make for myself.
AI only knows what you tell it
Most founders find it hard to put into words what makes them different. That's normal. You're too close to it.
Before I design anything, my brand questionnaire and research dig into your story, your customers and your point of view. The best brands don't manufacture personality. They uncover what's already there. A prompt can't do that digging, because it doesn't know which questions to ask.
Trust lives in the small details
In a 2006 study by Carleton University, people formed a first impression of a website in about 50 milliseconds, and it coloured what they thought afterwards. They rarely notice spacing, type pairing or how two colours sit together. They do notice when something feels off.
Taste is what keeps a bold, quirky brand looking professional and trustworthy. Those small calls are where it happens.
One brand, everywhere
AI tends to give you a pile of separate outputs: a logo here, a social template there. A brand only works when every touchpoint feels like it came from the same place.
In a March 2026 survey by Storyblok, 80% of online shoppers said inconsistent messaging lowered their trust or raised doubts about a brand. I turn the thinking into one system across your packaging, website, socials and signage, with illustration and details a prompt wouldn't think of.
You own it outright
Because every piece of final artwork is made by me, you own your brand outright. No AI-generated artwork sits inside it.
Every brand I make also comes with an AI-ready brand kit: rules your own AI tools can follow, so the content you make later stays on brand. Use AI as much as you like after we're done. It'll be working from your brand instead of everyone else's.
When AI is enough, and when it isn't
If you're testing an idea or need something to tide you over before launch, AI and DIY tools are a reasonable place to start. Plenty of businesses try DIY first.
When your brand starts holding you back, it's time for a designer. In a July 2025 survey by Adobe Express, 82% of UK business owners said they'd held back from promoting their work because their branding didn't feel professional enough. If that sounds familiar, your brand is already costing you.
AI can't taste. I can.
